Airalo China eSIM Review: Pricing, Plans and What You Get

Airalo offers several China eSIM plans. The most popular is 3 GB for 7 days at around $9–15 depending on promotions. There is also a 5 GB / 15 day plan and a 10 GB / 30 day plan. For most short trips, the 3 GB plan is enough if you use hotel WiFi at night and only need data for maps, translation, messaging, and occasional search outside. How to Install Airalo China eSIM Before Your Flight

Open the Airalo app or website and buy the China eSIM before your flight. After purchase, you will receive a QR code or manual activation code. On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → scan the QR code. On Android: Settings → Network → SIM → Add eSIM → scan the code. Install the eSIM profile while you still have home WiFi. Label it ‘Airalo China’ so you know which SIM is which later. Do NOT activate data roaming on the Airalo SIM yet — wait until you land.

Airalo eSIM Activation: What Happens When You Land in China

After landing in China, go to Settings → Cellular / SIM and select the Airalo eSIM. Turn ON data roaming for this SIM only. It should connect to China Unicom or China Mobile within 1–3 minutes. If it does not connect immediately, toggle Airplane Mode on and off once. The first connection can take up to 5 minutes in large airports. Do not panic if the connection is slow at first — airport networks are crowded.

Which Apps Work with Airalo China eSIM (and Which Do Not)

Because Airalo routes data through Hong Kong or Singapore servers, many international apps work without a VPN. Google Maps, Gmail, Google Search, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube usually work. However this is not guaranteed — routing can change. WeChat, Alipay, Amap, and Baidu Maps always work fine since they are China-based. Apps that sometimes get blocked include TikTok, Netflix (library differs), and some banking apps that detect non-home-country IP addresses.

Airalo China eSIM Speed Test: 4G Performance in Cities and Rural Areas

Airalo China eSIM runs on 4G/LTE networks through China Unicom. In cities, speeds are generally 10–30 Mbps — fast enough for maps, video calls, and streaming music. In rural areas and on high-speed trains between cities, speed drops to 2–5 Mbps which is enough for messaging and maps but not video. The connection is stable in cities and most tourist areas. Coverage inside subway tunnels and remote mountain areas (Zhangjiajie, parts of Yunnan) can be patchy — download offline maps before going to these places.

Airalo China eSIM Not Working? Common Problems and Fixes

1) No signal after landing: toggle Airplane Mode, wait 30 seconds, turn off. Make sure data roaming is ON for the Airalo SIM.

2) Shows connected but apps don’t load: check APN settings. The APN should be ‘globaldata’ or whatever Airalo’s instructions say. On iPhone this is usually automatic; on Android you may need to enter it manually.

3) eSIM disappeared after phone restart: go to Settings → Cellular and re-enable the Airalo line. The eSIM profile does not delete itself.

4) Apps are blocked: try turning off your home SIM temporarily. Some phones route certain app traffic through the wrong SIM.

Airalo vs Saily vs Yesim: How Airalo Compares to Other China eSIMs

Airalo is the easiest to set up and has the best app interface for beginners. Saily is usually a few dollars cheaper and uses similar routing — check Saily China plans. Yesim offers higher data caps for heavy users — compare Yesim options. If you want unlimited data and do not mind paying more, Holafly is an option but not in the Travelpayouts program. For most travelers doing a 7–14 day trip with moderate phone use, Airalo 3–5 GB is the sweet spot.
